Northern Lights Alarm
At our resort, our Northern Lights watch will monitor the night sky
Significantly increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights with our Northern Lights watcher, who makes sure you don’t miss seeing the light phenomenon. They monitor the skies and alert Glass Igloo and SnowHotel guests who opted for the service as soon as things start to happen in the Arctic skies.
What causes the Northern Lights
According to Sámi legends, a fox scatters snow with its tail while running on the fells of Lapland, creating sparks in the Northern sky. The scientific explanation for the Northern Lights is however the impact of charged particles from the solar wind in the Earth’s atmosphere on the Aurora zone surrounding the magnetic poles. The Northern Lights are usually green and yellow, and in strong eruptions, red and purple Northern Lights are seen, when electrically charged particles from space enter the Earth’s upper atmosphere.
When can I see the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights are colorful and dancing light phenomena, in the Aurora zone, where the Northern Lights are usually visible on all clear nights. The Northern Lights blaze in the Lapland sky about 150 nights a year. In Rovaniemi, the Northern Lights season starts at the end of August and continues until the beginning of April. Our resort is open from 1st September to April 1st, so at Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos it is always a good possibility to see the Northern Lights on a clear night. The Northern Lights are usually visible between ten in the evening and two in the morning. However, the main rule is that you can see the Northern Lights when it is dark enough, sometimes even in the early evening.
